Project

“On the Materiality of (Forced) Migration” is a research project, which seeks to understand the relationship of humans and things in the context of flight and migration. In doing so, we focus on the complexity of these relationships: The expectations for the future associated with items, the emotions triggered by things, and the diverse interpretations of objects. This website documents the ongoing process of our research. It serves as a research laboratory and gives readers the opportunity to participate in the research process with their own contributions submitted via the Open Archive.

“On the Materiality of (Forced) Migration” is a cooperation of three partners: The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Göttingen, the Museum Friedland and the Berlin-based exhibition agency “Die Exponauten. Exhibitions et cetera."
From September 2018 to July 2021, the three partner institutions, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, are developing different perspectives on specific human-thing relations in the context of flight and migration processes.

The starting point is ethnographic fieldwork, which begins in the Friedland Transit Camp (FTC) in Lower Saxony, an initial reception center for refugees, late repatriates and Jewish immigrants. Building on this, we follow people, things, and discourses, in the sense of multi-sited fieldwork, to other places and examine the process of their onward travel and arrival. The research extends to the adjacent Museum Friedland, which collects, exhibits, and imparts impressions of the history and the present of the FTC through objects. The research examines the significance of things, the expectations for the future the inhabitants of the FTC connect with these things, as well as perspectives of the locals on the FTC and the topics of flight and migration.

The online platform, planned and realizedby the exhibition agency “Die Exponauten”, presents the ongoing research findings and functions as a research laboratory. In addition to the fieldwork results of the Department for Social and Cultural Anthropology, the Museum Friedland and “Die Exponauten” also contribute objects, observations, and content which illustrate the complex significance and relationships of things and the associated affects and emotions.

The aim of the project is to devise an interactive exhibition over the course of three years, which itself is part of the research process and – in relation to the materiality of (forced) migration – explores and tests new constellations and perspectives and feeds these into the research project. A range of civil society groups (i.a. inhabitants of the FTC, local population, civilian actors active in the context of migration) are involved in the collaborative process of the project.

Website

First sketches, thoughts, fieldnotes, as well as interim and final results, are clustered on the website materialitaet-migration.de

The basic idea is to make the research project open, accessible, and to visibly incorporate the specific competences of all three partners.

The website is more than a mere page with information on the project, it depicts it in its processuality and should offer both researchers and interested web users the opportunity to use the generated database to gain in-depth knowledge. Through the visualization of specifically tagged content, new perspectives, interdependencies, relations, and overlays can emerge, making the continuously incorporated contents valuable pointers in the research process.

"Furthermore, the website gives also room for alternative voices and perspectives to help shape the project: Therefore, the collaborative aspect of getting involved through the Open Archive or the social media channels is a key component. On the one hand, it should support the research project; on the other hand, it should create social added value and show that research is, in the best case, always collaborative.

Flight and migration are omnipresent, sometimes fiercely contested phenomena of the present, which is made clear mainly by the (medial) presence of these topics. However, many voices go unheard, which is why we depend on your participation!

Through this website, we want to document and explore the significance and the diverse dynamics of (forced) migration in ways that reflect the complexity of the topic. Send us your photos of objects and stories documenting the multifaceted relationships that stretch between objects and people in the context of migration. That way we can create a comprehensive database that goes beyond university research.

We are happy to receive materials, ideas, and stories: matmig@sowi.uni-goettingen.de. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Historian, responsible for communications, marketing and events at Museum Friedland.

Katharina Brunner B.A.
