About bringing along, leaving behind and purchasing new things of the household in the context of flight and displacement. (1945/2015)

This research analyses the meaning of things for refugees and displaced persons they brought along, left behind or purchased. It focuses on two different refugee movements: flight and displacement of the German-speaking population of Czechoslovakia after the second world war and recent refugee movements around 2015. With a biographical approach, we analyse how things are or were used to shape daily lives, e.g. what role they play in the process of home-making, in establishing (material) continuity and social involvement.
